Notable Works by Marco

Can you pick a few highlights from your work that you're especially proud of?

I’m very proud of my new solo album ’Their Colors Fade’ and also our latest Aristocrats album ‘You Know What!?’ and our recently released ‘Duck’ album. But I think it also wouldn't hurt mentioning some of the productions I’m part of, such as Joe Stariani’s ’Shockwave Supernova’ or Steven Wilson’s ‘Raven….’ and ‘Hand Cannot Erase’ albums.

How would you define your main role on most of your projects these days?

I’m getting hired a lot as a session drummer. But mainly I’m writing and recording music for my band The Aristocrats and my solo releases.

What was some favorite music growing up and how has that evolved?

My parents are huge music lovers and took me at a very young age to see bands such as Queen, Jethro Tull and many more. Being Hi-Fi audiophile freaks as well, they introduced me to lots of cool albums. I clearly remember that when I was 6 years old, hearing Queen’s News Of The World album changed my life and I decided that music will be forever a part of my life. To this day Queen remains one of my favorite bands of all time. But there are of course many one favorite bands and artists such as Kraftwerk, Kate Bush, Frank Zappa, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Judas Priest, Steely Dan, Ryuichi Sakamoto, XTC, and many more :-). Too many to mention here, hehe.

Can you name any factors that influenced the course of your musical life?

Yes absolutely. It would be my very first show my drum teacher invited me out to play with his band for a few songs. I will never forget the moment when I was being scared and frightened on stage for the very first time in my life. And all I could do was concentrate on just playing the songs right. I was a 12 year old kid, and had no experience. However that changed literally on that very first show, when I had a little drum solo interlude in the midsection of a big band tune we had played that very evening. After I finished the solo, I all of a sudden heard people clapping and saw all the smiling faces.

That was a big deal for me, and all of sudden the whole stage fright scenario went away and I didn’t want to leave the stage anymore. It felt like such an enjoyable and positive bond between the audience and myself and all I could think of was that if I give energy to the people with utmost passion and joy, they will return this same kind of energy. I never wanted to lose that bond again. Happier people make a happier world. And music is here to stay and move us.

Can you describe a moment of frustration from your past work, and how you may have overcome it?

You know what …. Perfect fit for the audiophile platforms: I had searched for a long time on how to get better recordings and mixes done. It’s mind-blowing about how monitors and headphones can screw with your sound at times. I was always looking for the most neutral sound sources, so that I can deliver accurate signals. Well, shameless plug here now but why not: I can clearly say that the LCD-X headphones in combination with my Barefoot monitors give me amazing results, with precise EQ information and headroom/transparency.

What is your current favorite instrument, effect, or piece of gear?

Great question. I love my DW Purple Heart Kit, My combination of Neumann, Shure, Telefunken and Audix Micrphones. I love my Universal Audio Interfaces and Plug Ins. The Barefoot speakers and Audeze headphones. Furthermore I have my favorite guitars, which consist of an original vintage 1970 Fender Telecaster with a maple neck, a Les Paul Murphy Labs Gibson Gold Top, a Nik Huber Rietbergen with an ebony fingerboard, a Suhr hybrid Telecaster, roasted maple neck, and a Fender Custom Shop Strat with rosewood fingerboard.

Do you have any words of wisdom for people who might aspire toward a similar path?

Play with passion and believe in your craft and musical mission. Also, never be afraid of mistakes. It’s a learning curve and experience is the best teacher. It’s great to know that you can always explore new territories. Like a never ending well. And that means that you can always learn and develop. Why it matters? Imagine you would deliver the in your opinion perfect album. Where would you go from there? It would be time to stop, right? :-) Having written that: Keep searching and exploring. It’s the most fun and the way to keep the spark in your music and keeping things fresh.

How long have you been working with headphones, and how do you use them in your workflow?

I have a 50/50 workflow between using monitors and headphones. I usually record the best possible signals by dialing them already in the way I want to have them in my compositions. Usually that is achieved in my case by swapping forth and back between first monitors and then fine tuning them with headphones. Recently I find myself more and more comfortable though using primarily headphones and then after confirming the hopefully ‘worthy' result on multiple speaker systems.

How have your Audeze headphones affected your work? Can you tell us what you've been working on with them recently?

As I mentioned, I now had ordered one of your headphones and am very pleased with it. It’s the LCD-X and I love the ambience and accuracy in the frequencies. I feel I can in absolute untainted and authentic manner deliver mixes that immediately sound great on other headphones and speaker systems.

Believe me …. I had been looking for equipment like that for a long time. Like I wrote a little earlier in the interview, these headphones in combination with my Barefoot monitors do a lot of magic and are getting me great results. After having worked with the Audeze headphones now for over half a year and two productions in, I can clearly confirm that they were quite an eye opener for me. I think that except/or along with my Barefoot monitors I have never had more truthful untainted results.

When it usually took me around 6 mix revisions, after having ‘tested’ the song on different known sound sources, the Audeze headphones pretty much take me right away to what I had envisioned, level and sound image wise. My recent productions with the fabulous Audeze cans include my forthcoming solo album and the brand new Aristocrats album titled ‘Duck’. I’ve been recording and mixing songs for The Aristocrats and also a new project/collaboration with Hans Zimmer’s cellist Mariko Muranaka.

I have to thank one of the members of Thaikkudam Bridge for recommending me your wonderful cans. :-)
